The other active constituents of Gotu Kola are the other triterpene acids asiaticoside A (madecassoside) and asiaticoside B. Flavonoids such as quercetin and kaempferol, and flavone deriviatives such as stigmasterol, sesquiterpenes, sitosterol, and isothankuniside are contained in the leaves. Essential oils and nutrients such as calcium, iron, potassium, phosphorous, beta-carotene, riboflavin, thiamine, vitamin C and niacin are also present in the plant leaves. Gotu Kola contains a high concentration of tannins at approximately 20-25% of its composition.
The triterpene asiaticoside promotes anti-inflammatory activities by inhibiting the inflammatory response induced by lipopolysaccharides (LPS) and stimulates the synthesis of collagen. Animal research suggests that Gotu Kola’s unique saponins may promote neural growth. Gotu Kola’s ability to promote healthy circulation and relieve symptoms of venous insufficiency is due to its saponins which inhibit the enzymes hyaluronidase and elastase. These enzymes breakdown the collagen and elastin matrix outside cells and leads to fluid leakage through the cell wall, resulting in fluid accumulation and swelling, or edema.
