Essential Fatty Acids (EFA) are a group of fatty acids that cannot be synthesized in the animal organism, including humans, and must be ingested. Eating foods low in essential fatty acids can lead to disorders.
EFA include an omega-3 fatty acids (alpha-linolenic acid) and an omega-6 fatty acids (linoleic acid) that are affect the cardiovascular system and are responsible for the proper functioning of our immune system. In addition, some studies suggests that omega-3s slow down cell aging process.
Among the good sources of these fatty acids are flax seeds, fish oil and plant oils, for example avocado and nuts.
