The properties of Theanine
Theanine (C7H14N2O3) – amino acid, typically found in green tea, studies suggest that theanine improves learning and memory. Theanine may have a neuro-protective effect on the brain, and appears to stimulate the same brain waves that are activated when you meditate.
Studies looking at the effects of both L-theanine and caffeine have found a rise in focus, motivation, and mood, improved alpha wave levels (a sign of relaxation), and reduced heart rate and blood pressure. It seems as though adding theanine to the mix negates many of the side effects of excessive caffeine usage while enhancing the positives. More about Theanine on Stress Management Basics: L-Theanine.
L-Theanine:
- Promotes sleep quality (In search of a safe natural sleep aid).
- Increases alpha brain waves (L-theanine, a natural constituent in tea, and its effect on mental state).
- May regulate stress levels (L-Theanine reduces psychological and physiological stress responses).
- May improve performance on cognitively demanding tasks when combined with caffeine (The combined effects of L-theanine and caffeine on cognitive performance and mood).
