The properties of Spirulina
Spirulina is a blue-green alga that has been commercialized as a dietary supplement for modulating immune function, as well as ameliorating various diseases. A previous study in allergic rhinitis patients demonstrated that Spirulina can modulate the Th cell profile by suppressing the differentiation of Th2 cells. It can also inhibit the production of IL-4. In an experimental study, it was effective for relieving inflammation of the nasal mucosa and decreasing serum histamine and immunoglobulin (Ig) E levels.
Spirulina consumption significantly improve the symptoms and physical findings, including nasal discharge, sneezing, nasal congestion, and itching, compared with placebo(1004).
